My mother made these. But she made them with cashew nuts and arranged split cashews in different patterns over the cookies. Those days it was biscuits. If she used Pistas then it was Pista biscuits. I once tried these using water chestnut flour and amaranth seed pops instead of almond flakes. These could be eaten on fasting days too. Water chestnut flour gives the cookies a rich chocolate colour without  the addition of cocoa powder.

This is my 2nd recipe in baked category

Ingredients:

1 cup Whole Wheat Flour

      1/4 cup Sugar

      1/4 tsp Salt

      1/4 cup Almonds

      1 tsp Nutmeg powder

      1/4 cup ghee

      Small amount of milk

      Almond slices as needed

      (approx 1/4 cup)

Method:

Powder the sugar and almonds together. It will look

like breadcrumbs. Ghee should be nice and thick. If it

is melted keep in the fridge for some time. Now mix the

powdered almonds sugar and ghee and beat till light

and fluffy.

Add salt and nutmeg powder, add the flour and mix

well to make a nice and soft dough. If necessary use a

little cold milk. Make small balls, (I made 18) and

flatten a little and dip them in the sliced almonds and

press a bit so that the almond slices will stick to the

dough.

Keep them on a tray like

this.

Bake them in a moderate hot oven at 170 degrees Celsius for 12 to 15 minutes or till edges are brown and the almond slices look toasted.

Remove and cool on a wire rack. Serve with tea coffee or just as it is.
