Here is an experiment that was very successful today. I had a huge bunch of Raw plantains and tried to make Kofta Curry with a different twist.
Ingredients for the KOFTAS:
4 raw plantains,peeled and grated
1tsp green chilies roughly ground
1 tsp ginger roughly ground
1/2 cup grated fresh coconut
1/2 cup roasted and crushed groundnuts (peanuts)
1/4 cup besan or cornflour
salt to taste
Vegetable oil for frying (I used filtered groundnut (peanut) oil)
Mix all the ingredients and make small marble sized balls and deep fry in hot oil till brown in colour. Drain well and put them in water for 10 to15 minutes and then remove, gently squeeze between your palms to drain out excess water and keep aside.
Ingredients for the CURRY:
1 tblsp vegetable oil (I used filtered groundnut (peanut) oil)
a few curry leaves
1tsp red chilli powder *
1tsp roasted jeera (cumin ) powder *
1 tsp roasted dhane (coriander) powder *
1 tblsp tamarind pulp *
1 tsp garam masala *
Salt to taste
1 cup thick coconut milk
1 cup water
Heat the oil in a deep and broad vessel, add curry leaves and add the water. Add all the ingredients except coconut milk and let it boil for 2 minutes. lower heat and let simmer for a while. Add koftas to the water add in more water if necessary. cover and let simmer for 2 minutes. Add coconuts and give it a gentle stir. Keep the heat very low for a minute and serve hot with rice or chapatis.
* Note: Sometimes I put Mulgapodi instead of all the highlighted ingredients. Mulgapodi is a dry mix of many ingredients used as chutney to be eaten with idli and dosa.
